Travellers have for years hurtled past the Scottish Borders, eyes on the prize that is the heart-stopping Highlands. But with UK holidaymakers swamping the traditional hotspots, it’s a good time to check out the southern hinterlands. The Borders may not have the mighty Munros, but its softly rounded hills, wooded valleys, sleepy towns and ivy-tangled abbeys have their own magic.
