A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Jiuzhaigou County in northern Sichuan Province during the evening of Tuesday 8 August 2017, causing significant structural damage. Jiuzhaigou Valley is a major tourist destination. Authorities advise the valley is closed to tourists until further notice. The level of advice has not changed. Exercise normal safety precautions in China. Higher levels apply in Tibet and Xinjiang.
